Make a budget before adding more media
Inventory the first screen's images, fonts, scripts, and third-party embeds. Identify which assets communicate the offer and which merely repeat it. A single well-composed cover can do more useful work than several decorative videos competing for bandwidth.
Set a project-specific media budget and test against it as the design evolves. There is no universal file-size limit that makes every website fast. Device speed, connection quality, caching, and the order of requests all affect what a visitor experiences.
Deliver the right image for its placement
Optimize photographs into modern formats, keep enough resolution for the actual display area, and compare the compressed result with the original. Do not send a huge desktop image to a phone when a purposeful portrait composition is available.
Prioritize the visible cover image and defer images farther down the page. Reserve image dimensions or an aspect ratio before loading so the text and controls do not move. Test focal positions on both portrait and landscape screens; saving bytes should not mean cutting off the subject.
A fast experience is not a stripped-down brand. It is a considered one.
Know what the measurements describe
Google's Core Web Vitals guidance describes loading with LCP, interaction responsiveness with INP, and visual stability with CLS. Its good-experience thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile of visits.
A lab run helps diagnose a page, but it is not the same as real-user data. Review both when available. A new or low-traffic site may not have enough field data yet; report that limitation rather than presenting one favorable screenshot as a universal result.
Check the tasks behind the score
Performance is a release habit, not a final polish step. Keep a before-and-after record of meaningful changes, note the test conditions, and revisit the important pages when new content or integrations are introduced.
- Load the cover on a slower connection and confirm the main message remains readable.
- Open menus and change selections without delayed feedback.
- Confirm images and fonts do not shift the primary action.
- Complete a form with a keyboard and a touch screen.
- Check reduced-motion behavior and a short phone viewport.
- Re-test after adding analytics, chat, or other third-party tools.
